Kirk Trow, Grand View University’s first tennis coach has returned to campus after leaving for AIB in 2013. Trow worked for Grand View for a year and a half before leaving for a personal family medical issue.

Being the head tennis coach as well as an advisor, Trow had spent most of his time traveling, and he needed more stability within his workplace. His position at AIB was an 8 a.m-5 p.m atmosphere that gave him more control over time spent with his family.

By working at AIB, Trow was able to attend to his financial and personal needs at the same time. An opportunity arose for Trow to return to the Grand View campus. He is now back at the tennis courts, a place where he has coached for over 30 years.

Zach Martin, sophomore player said he is more happy than anything on Trow’s return.

Trow said he is also happy to be going back to his favorite sport.

“It’s a very fun sport to participate in and one to coach,” Trow said.

According to Trow, he and the previous coach of the tennis team played tennis together in high school.

Now that Trow’s back as the head coach, assistant coach Austin Grundy said that after a hectic year without him, he knows that Trow has clear goals and ideas for the future of the tennis program.

Though the players were weary about their new coach, Grundy said that they have grown to better understand each other. The team is competing in a different conference this year; Trow said that they would just continue to improve to that level.

“We’ve got some wonderful players,” Trow said.

Trow said that in addition to making sure that he has a roster of well-seasoned players, he wants to give an opportunity to anyone who has played in the past to get back out on the court.

“We can find an opportunity for them to compete at a level here too,” Trow said.

Trow said that he works in conjunction with the city to supply the players with courts to practice on. His hope is to find their own facilities closer to campus for future seasons.

The Grand View University tennis team will compete again after Christmas break, with both the men’s and women’s first game on January 23rd against Concordia University.
