GV grads come back

After graduating from college, most people don’t think they would come back to campus. There are some exceptions for a few Grand View alumni, though. Some stayed because of their passion for campus, while others stayed to get their masters. Whatever the reason is, they all had a theme in common: a job.

Paige Sanders is a 2012 alumna of Grand View with a degree in business management. She is in charge of student accounts on campus. Throughout Sanders’ undergraduate experience at Grand View, she was involved in View Crew and Viking Volunteers. Sanders said that her favorite events throughout her undergraduate career involved homecoming.

Sanders also came to appreciate the love and support from not only friends and peers on campus but also from the faculty.

The positive experiences that Sanders had on campus led her to what she wanted to do after graduation, stay involved with campus.

Sanders continues to enjoy being at Grand View and said she loves her job.

“The biggest reason why I love my job and I love Grand View is because you can see the impact first hand, with being such a small university. If you’re able to help one student figure out their financial situation per day, it’s the best feeling in the world.”

Deb Jenkins is from the United Kingdom; she came here in 2009, graduated from Grand View in 2013, and is the assistant women’s soccer coach. Her job requires her to help the head coach, deal with the administrative side and recruit players. Deb graduated with a degree in Kinesiology and then came back to Grand View for work.

“The job opportunity came up here and I knew I wanted to continue coaching and I had a good reputation with Betsy already and it seemed like a good fit.”

Jenkins said she doesn’t want to go back home anytime soon. When she was looking for colleges back home she wanted to keep playing soccer and the places she visited only had soccer clubs, they weren’t competitive enough. She plans on getting her masters here at Grand View, while being the assistant coach.

Rhett Kane is a native from Hawaii and another alumnus of Grand View. He is the Men’s assistant volleyball coach for Grand View. Kane is a former volleyball player for Grand View, and graduated with a kinesiology degree. With that in mind why would Rhett stay here in Iowa to get his graduate if you could stay warm in Hawaii? The answer to that is the cost. “Hawaii is a beautiful place and will always be my home but it isn’t cheap to live in paradise.”

While he is an assistant for the Men’s Volleyball team he is also taking graduate classes in order to get his masters degree to become a coach somewhere else, “My dream would be to go back home and coach for University of Hawaii”.

Trisha Griffin is an alumna and former athlete for Grand View. Griffin never expected to come back to Grand View after she graduated. But, when she saw that there was an opening in the Student Life Offices to work as an AmeriCorps Vista for a year she immediately applied and was hired. She has two positions she works, one is in the Student Life Offices and the other is with AmeriCorps. “I help Grand View students here become more involved with volunteer opportunities and with Iowa College Aid I try to help the three step process which is application, FASFA and then decision day for high school seniors to go on to college.”

After her year is done one Griffin hopes to get her masters in athletic training here at Grand View or her masters in science at Iowa State University and to be an athletic trainer for a high school sports team. For those who want to pursue their masters Griffin has one piece of advice, “Make sure it’s your passion because if it’s not then you wasted a little bit of money.”

All four alumni have taken their undergraduate experience they had at Grand View and came back to make campus better in one-way or another.
