Holiday Dorm Room Decorations

Christmas seems to be starting earlier and earlier every year.

Some people ignore Christmas completely until Thanksgiving is over, but we all know those people who skip the pumpkins and fall décor and head straight for the trees and lights.

For most people the holidays bring happy memories and joy, and the decorations only help to bring attention to the fact that it is coming soon.

Alyssa Stripe (So.) started decorating with her roommates in early November. They transformed their door into a Christmas tree by adding burlap, garland and ribbon. They added paper snowflakes around the tree and presents below.

“We love Christmas, so it’s definitely not too early for us,” Stripe said. “Decorating gives all of us an opportunity to be creative and work together on something we all love.”

Some people just started the decorating process, and others were in full swing in November. Megan Hummel and Shelby Hanson (Jrs.) took full advantage of sales and started decorating on November 14. They made their own wreath, bought Christmas incense, snowflakes and other décor to tack up throughout their room. They used the decorating process as a stress reliever by blaring Christmas music and baking cookies.

“We are only in school for two weeks in December, so we felt like we needed to put up decorations sooner so they got their full use,” Hanson said.

Other rooms just decorated their door to spread the Christmas cheer.

“It makes the dorm feel more homey,” Kendra Cardines (Jr.) said.

“I think we are well past Halloween, so it is time to get in the Christmas spirit,” Mitchell McPartland (Sr.) said.

“I think the reason I love Christmas so much is because I feel like it brings everyone together for a couple hours.” Tjosaas said, “Plus everything becomes warm, welcome, and sparkly.”

However, not everyone gets in the holiday spirit. Carmen McDermott, (So.) loves Thanksgiving and doesn’t like Christmas at all. She thinks Thanksgiving is overlooked because so many people start decorating for Christmas.

“I hate that,” McDermott said. “We don’t skip any other holiday except Thanksgiving. Plus I really don’t like Christmas music, so the earlier the decorating starts, the earlier the I have to listen to Christmas songs.”

Alli Souhrada (Sr.) also said that Thanksgiving is a holiday, too, and needs to be celebrated fully before Christmas celebrations begin.

“Christmas has become so commercialized,” Souhrada said. ” If I lived on campus, I would not allow my roommates to decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving has passed.”

Derek Witt (Sr.) loves Christmas but does not think decorations should be put up until after Thanksgiving has passed.

“Pre-Thanksgiving is turkey décor,” Witt said. “Black Friday marks the beginning of Christmas shopping, so it’s the beginning of Christmas season.”

No matter how much people agree or disagree, come Thanksgiving night it starts to look a lot like Christmas.
