Review: Crème is cupcake heaven

Crème is a bakery in Des Moines that made national headlines three years ago when it appeared on the hit show “Cupcake Wars.”

Crème is a bakery by day and a bar by night. During the day, Crème offers a wide variety of cupcakes, cake truffles, bars, cookies and cinnamon rolls. During the night, they offer a variety of cupcakes along with cocktails. They also have cupcake-inspired drinks, such as Cupcake Chardonnay and Cupcake Moscato.

Crème has a laid-back, relaxed atmosphere that is the perfect place to go after a day at work to wind down and relax. As it is a first-come-first-serve atmosphere, it feels like a very exclusive cupcake bar. The lighting was soft and natural, as it shied away from overusing fluorescent lights. Natural lighting is relaxing for drinking and eating desserts, which makes you want to buy more.

Something I appreciated was that there were signs everywhere that showcased what was on the menu for that day and also their specials for the month. I think this is helpful for anyone who hasn’t been here before, so they don’t have too many questions walking in.

The day I went, they were offering nine different types of cupcakes, two of which were vegan.

I was instantly drawn to the Peanut Butter Passion cupcake. It had a gooey fudge middle and peanut butter icing that sent me to Heaven. The chocolate cake was moist and rich. It was topped with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup chunks, making this cupcake a peanut butter lover’s dream.

The vegan Raspberry Lemon cupcake was one of the best cupcakes I have ever tried. I was skeptical at first because it was vegan; I assumed it would be dry and bland. I was so wrong. This lemon cupcake was moist and filled with raspberry filling, topped with lemon frosting and drizzled with a raspberry sauce.

The only cupcake I was really disappointed with was the Vanilla Vanilla cupcake. It was dry and tasted old. There was nothing about
it that made it stand out above the rest. I like my cupcakes to be moist and melt in my mouth, but the Vanilla Vanilla one was the exact opposite.

If you are wanting a plain cupcake that isn’t too wild and full
of stuff, I would recommend the Almond Raspberry cupcake. There isn’t a ton going on, but you still get amazing flavor.

The cupcakes are filling; you would only need to eat one. Every cupcake costs $3, and the vegan cupcakes cost $3.50. The price point is good considering how big the cupcakes are. Whether you decide to eat a regular cupcake or vegan cupcake, you will be happy with your choice of Crème.
