Steak n Shake

I would rate this experience a 7/10

Steak ’n Shake, the highly anticipated West Des Moines restaurant that was pushed back for nearly two years has finally opened earlier this year. The restaurant, which has over 550 locations in 28 states, claims a tradition of serving the country’s best, freshest and tastiest burgers and shakes.

A couple of my friends and I decided to go check out what the hype was all about. Unfortunately, we could not eat inside due to COVID, but they do allow for drive thru and pickup curbside. When approaching the restaurant, we were confused because the line for service curved into a circle. We had to wait in line for at least 45 mins just to get our food. Also, the restaurant was next to a hotel and a gas station, so traffic could be a problem once it gets busy. The parking lot and the ordering line seemed too small. Either way, I was still excited to try out their menu.

The variety of the menu is something that’s expected out of a fast-food restaurant. They offer a regular double ’n cheese steakburger, a bacon ’n cheese steakburger, a western BBQ ’n bacon steakburger, and a garlic steakburger. Those were the top burgers that I saw on the menu, so I figured that those were their signatures.

The burger that I got was a number 4, which was a bacon ’n cheese steakburger meal. It came with a side of fries and a drink. To be honest, it just tasted like a regular burger. If I had to compare it to any other burger it would have to be Wendy’s or even Sonic’s. I thought the burgers would be much bigger, but I thought wrong. I’m not saying it was bad or I didn’t like it; it’s just something that I would not spend so much money on when I can get the Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger at Wendy’s for $1.99. On the other hand, the fries were pretty good. I could devour a gigantic box of their fries.

The shakes, in my opinion, are probably the best menu item. I ordered the chocolate chip cookie dough, and it was the bomb. The best shake hands-down that I have tasted. I would put it up there with Dairy Queen and B-Bops shakes. It doesn’t melt too fast, and it just tastes amazing. For the price of $3.09, it was definitely worth it. I would highly recommend it for anyone.

Overall, I do recommend that you try this place at least once. At the very least, you have to 100% try out their shakes because I think you cannot get anything better than this.

I would rate this experience a 7/10 simply because their shakes are phenomenal. Their service was decent, too. But I can’t go higher than a 7/10 because the line was too long and their burgers were good but just too small for me. And I’m a firm believer that you should get what you pay for.
