Coaches Kolaches

Coaches Kolaches is a tasty bakery in Clive that makes handmade kolaches. A kolache is a sweet bread filled with fruit or meat. Kolaches are most common in Texas but originated in the Czech Republic. Coaches was started by Texas native Brent and Patrice Curvey. Brent moved from Texas to Iowa to play football for Iowa State University. Brent went on to play for the Carolina Panthers for a couple of months and is currently coaching football. He was an assistant coach at Grand View University for two seasons, during the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 seasons. In his first season at GV, they won the national championship against the Cumberland Patriots in 2013.

The idea for the Curveys to start a business came about when Brent was missing kolaches.

“My husband is from Texas, and kolaches are huge down in Texas,” Patrice said. “He used to go every morning before school to get himself a kolache and chocolate milk, so once he got to Iowa, he realized that there were no kolaches, so we came up with the idea because he missed kolaches and I love to cook.” Trying to make a kolache wasn’t easy initially.

“I got in the kitchen, and it took me about six months to figure out the bread,” Patrice said. We started making them from home, and I catered for a little bit, about a year, and then we started getting busy, so we decided to open a storefront.” Coaches Kolaches bread is homemade, and they cook all their ingredients. When Brent brought Kolaches to Iowa, it was like bringing a piece of home with him. Coaches Kolaches have many options, some savory and some sweet.

Some of the kolaches they have are egg and bacon, sausage and egg, jalapeño and ham and cheese. Their most popular kolaches are sausage, egg and jalapeño with a side of hot sauce or country gravy. The bread is sweet, and at first, that is all I tasted when I tried it for the first time. The closest bread it compares to would be a croissant because they both have soft outsides with fluffy bread filling inside them. It is a great go-to breakfast item or a snack for lunch if you are only having one. I tried four of their kolaches, and one of them was ham and cheese. The ham and cheese kolache just melted right into my mouth. The ham was sweet, and the cheese was delectable too. It was my second favorite out of the four kolaches I had. My third favorite kolache that I tried was steak and egg, and it just felt like those two ingredients should not go together, but it worked. My fourth favorite of the kolaches that I tried was the bacon and egg, and it was my least favorite because I liked the other ones more, but this kolache was still delicious.

My favorite kolache that I tried was the sausage and egg; the mixture of all the filling went together well. Overall, the bread was the best part of kolache, and the filling inside was great too. If you have never tried it before and are planning to get some, I recommend the sausage and egg and the ham and cheese. If you love breakfast or savory food, you certainly should try it out. There is minimal seating, but enough seats if you and a couple of friends want to eat there. When people go to Coaches Kolaches, they usually just come and go when they get their food. When you walk in, the area is small, but there is enough room for many customers. I would give Coaches Kolaches a 5/5 rating overall because they are not expensive, their food tastes excellent, their customer service is good, and it leaves you craving more.
