Fruitful creations

Drinks, paint and good company: this is what a typical wine and canvas art class entails. Over the weekend, I attended a class at The Social Canvas in Waukee, and I was not disappointed. I do enjoy looking at and making art, but by no means would I consider myself a painter. With this type of class, you certainly don’t have to be one. This art class is open to people of all skill levels.

First, you go online and register for the painting that you want to do. They have all types of paintings and a lot of different times to choose from. On the day you’re registered for, you walk in and the canvases are set up. The instructor hands you your materials, and you get to pick out your own paint.

The painting I chose was purple leaves and flowers, but most people chose to do a different color. There is a lot of creative freedom with these classes. They have wine you can purchase (or pop for those under 21,) but most people bring their own. I was under the impression that it was bring your own drinks, so I think it’s great that they have drinks available to purchase in case someone forgets to bring theirs.

When you actually begin painting, the instructor stands on a small platform in order to show how to do each step. She talked at a decent pace when explaining each step, waiting for people to finish before moving on. This was nice because everyone moves at their own pace. I am a bit of a perfectionist, which means I was one of those slower painters. She would also walked around to help those with questions and to socialize with the students. She wouldn’t paint anything for anyone because she wanted the paintings to be 100 percent our own.

The entire time I was painting, I felt very relaxed and comfortable. There was music playing in the background, and everyone was socializing with one another, so there was never any awkward moments or dead silence.

This wine and canvas class had a price of $35, and I would highly recommend The Social Canvas to anyone willing to try something new. Along with wine and canvas, they also offer wooden board painting classes, and paint by number classes where you send in a picture and they have numbers printed on a canvas for you. The whole experience was great, and I would certainly go again.
