Soothingly electric: Regina Spektor

Unlike most, Spektor tends to add a little bit of funk into her otherwise calming music. She has an amazingly soothing voice and can easily make me want to go straight into nap time. If you’ve never heard her songs pop up on your Spotify study playlist, you’re doing it all wrong. Regina has a fun upbeat voice at times, but when she wants to she can really relax you. I personally love the song “Eet” from her album “Far,” which she made back in 2009. I’ve played that song on my iPod at least a million times before going to bed or while I’m studying. I really enjoy how she can make you feel different emotions, whether that’s calm, peaceful, happy, joyful or even inspired.

Spektor has found a new way to change up her music, but still stay true to her recent form of folk. Her newest album, “Remember Us to Life,” has a fun new twist to what listeners are used to hearing from her. A common in this new album is each song starting off either soft or joyful and then diving right into a darker, more upbeat rhythm. She has added more of an electric feel to her songs and I couldn’t love it any more. The main reason for these new eerie and electric sounds is because the album really emphasizes the life of an underdog. If you pay attention to the lyrics, you’ll hear her stories of underdogs and the uprising adventures she has possibly gone through herself. I love that Spektor found a change she liked. She added an orchestral feel to her background and it gave this album a whole new vibe. Having that variety in her songwriting is important for listeners, as otherwise they tend to get bored with the same old sounding music.

All of the individual sounds and instruments that she blends into her songs make them that much more enjoyable. A song from her previous album, “Far,” called “Machine,” gives off a hint of what her new album is all about. It still has that electric sound which can draw in different crowds’ attention. This song also tends to have a darker feel, so if you’re into music in the minor scale, you’ll really like it. A song I would highly suggest from her new album would be “Small Bill$,” which has the biggest change in her music I’ve heard so far. The whole song sounds dark and different which is a great way to add variety to the rest of the album. She did a great job in changing things up with it and I think from hearing her other work that it’s a good change for the listeners.

I would highly suggest to listen to Spektor during study time, nap time, or even dance party time. She has a funky side and a relaxing side, which makes everything come together really well in her songs. It’s fun hearing something different like that, having the option to just sit back and enjoy her soothing sounds or being inspired to get everything done all at once. Whatever the case may be, she is a fantastic singer and a great listen. I hope most of you consider looking into her music and enjoy her new electric feel.
