Skyfish Review

In the beginning of most adventure games the character starts out with just a sword, but in the case of Legend of the Skyfish, you start out with a fishing pole.

The Legend of Zelda-inspired mobile app begins with a village of fishermen/women getting too greedy, and they search deeper and deeper in the water for their catch. This causes them to wake up an ancient and powerful evil being known as the Skyfish. Upon waking, the Skyfish commands his army of deep-sea creatures to take over the surface and enslave humanity. Your character, the hero, is a young girl who was separated from her brother by the army. She is tasked by the moon whale to defeat the Skyfish and save her people.

As mentioned before, your weapon is a fishing pole with a hook. The hook is used to grapple to different islands and stun enemies by dragging them. You only have four hearts of health for the whole game, but you can get armor that increases your maximum heart count.

After playing through the game for a week and a half, I found it very nostalgic. It’s like the first Legend of Zelda game in some aspects, especially the overhead view. There are also hidden treasure chests that have upgrades for your hooks, fishing pole and armor.

The art style of the game is very storybook-like and visually appealing. Overall, looking at the character from above and controlling her with a simple joystick and two buttons brings back feelings from classic adventure games, but the fishing hook adds a bit of new blood to the classic formula.

However, there are a few things that bother me about the game. For starters, the controls are a bit too sensitive with the joystick option, and the only other way to move is by swiping in the direction you want to go. When you use the attack button, you need to use the joystick to control the direction you swing because otherwise it will automatically swing up in default if you don’t.

After getting the first upgrade for each gear piece, I found that there are only four options for your gear, one of which is the default. I also didn’t like how you have to complete 15 stages in order to fight the boss of each area. The bosses don’t have special weaknesses, so you simply have to attack at the right time to damage them. Overall I would say this game is a good choice for those who enjoy casual gaming and like adventure games without the huge price. Legend of the Skyfish costs $2.99, but it has no in-app purchases. All in all, I recommend this game.
