The doctor you should see now

Doctor Strange, one of the most magically powerful heroes in the Marvel universe, was done justice on the big screen.

The movie begins with Dr. Strange, a famous surgeon whose ego is almost as big as Iron Man’s, getting into a horrible car accident as he is on his way to accept an award. This completely wrecks the nerves in his hands, which renders him incapable of continuing his career.

Desperate to get the use of his hands back, he tries increasingly experimental medical procedures, until he hears a rumor of a paralyzed person who was miraculously healed. Following the rumor leads Dr. Strange to the Ancient One. After she tells him that the healing was done through magic, he starts training in the mystic arts.

The film is well-done and keeps true to the original comic book storyline. The acting is also very good.

That being said, I feel like the special effects and the overall character development could have been better. I went into this movie thinking that they would start throwing around spells, but when I saw what they did for magic, I was disappointed. They didn’t show much in the way of magic spells, and the effects used for different dimensions made them look less like otherworldly places and more like a house of mirrors mixed with an M.C. Escher painting. I was also disappointed by the main villain, who didn’t seem to use the full extent of his almost limitless power.

Despite the lackluster special effects and the villain of the movie being nothing more than a giant computer-generated face, the acting was great and the story was spot on. In my opinion, if you stay in the loop of the Marvel movie series and don’t want to miss a possible hint at the next film, then I suggest you see Doctor Strange.
