Speak up: social media in relationships

Each issue, we’ll be asking the Grand View community to speak up about their opinions on a subject. This issue’s topic is how social media can impact relationships.

Morgan Schwab

“I think it should be something where you can show off your significant other, but people our age use it sometimes as like, ‘How many likes did I get?’ It creates an unspoken competition.

Subconsciously, sometimes it can be like, ‘I have more pictures with my boyfriend than this other couple,’ even in a teasing way, but underneath, it might actually bug you.

It’s just like with social media, in general. It’s something that should be connecting people but its so disconnecting.

“Nowadays, everything’s changed. Instead of saying ‘let’s go to dinner,’ we have so much communication in between that the communication in person isn’t always there. Social media takes away from our relationships, romantic or not, because a lot of people don’t know how to have a conversation in person anymore… If they do like someone or if they don’t, they can’t tell them.”

Morgan Cochrane-Wylie

“There’s a benefit and a downfall. One downfall could be that you’re not actually talking face-to-face, you’re more talking through a screen or a computer, but it could be a benefit because some people these days, it’s harder for them to talk face-to-face because of the society we live in, so meeting people online gives them more attainable pool of people to meet.”
