On Monday, September 21st, it was announced that two of Grand View’s athletes had been named Heart Players of the Week. Brandon Johnson (Jr.), the football team’s defensive end, and Myles Pfingsten (Sr.), a golfer, both received these honors as a result of their excellent performances over the past couple weeks.

Junior defensive end Brandon Johnson (Altoona, Iowa) was named Heart of America Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Avila Eagles this past Saturday as the #10 Vikings defeated Avila 77-7.

Brandon Johnson said he was rather surprised when he learned that he had won the award.

“I just kind of did my job,” he said in reference to his performance during the game against Avila University.

Johnson was a major contributor to the Viking’s defensive success in last weekend’s game. He performed two effective tackles and played a key role in allowing the rival team merely 138 total yards in offense and only 7 points by the end of the game. The overall performance of the Viking’s defense resulted in a 77-7 win.

The football team’s head coach, Mike Woodley, expressed his pleasure in Johnson’s achievement.

“When you get highlighted like that, I think it’s a real feather in the kid’s hat,” he said.

On Johnson’s general skills, Woodley states, “Along with all the God-given abilities he has, he is a tremendously hard worker in the weight room and on the practice field.”

The Heart of America Conference Defensive Player of the Week, Coach Woodley commented, is not an easy title to earn. Athletes are only nominated if it is believed they have a legitimate chance.

“I think [earning this title] gives other people the idea that you are working hard and doing what you are supposed to,” said Brandon Johnson.

Johnson states that his greatest lesson from this past weekend was: “Work hard and good things will com.”

Golfer Myles Pfingsten was especially surprised when he learned that he had earned the Heart of America Conference Player of the Week title. According to Pfingsten, he was not at all expecting to win the title and first learned of the award when it was announced online.

Pfingsten responded modestly in reference to his newly earned title.

“They just select an individual from our conference each week — whoever is playing well,” he said. “I guess they selected me.”

Pfingesten tied for 7th place in the tournament in Oklahoma City on September 14th and 16th. He finished the tournament with rounds of 74, 70, and 72, giving him a three-round total score of 216. In August, he played a similarly strong game and tied for 4th place.

Concerning the Oklahoma City tournament, Pfingsten remarked that the conditions were tough that day, with winds from 20 to as high as 30 mph on the second day.

Pfingsten insists that the Heart of America title has only pushed him to work even harder and strive toward earning more.
