Tobias Tyler

Grand View alumnus Tobias Tyler was involved in many activities while at GV. Tyler enjoyed playing football, but when football was over he became more involved with the communications program by joining Viewfinder Magazine staff and the video club.

Tyler has been interested in videography and photography since a young age. When he was younger, he started making YouTube videos over Call of Duty game play. When Tyler got to GV he wanted to be on the radio, but when he he picked up a camera, everything changed. Tyler became more involved in graphic design, photography and videography. Tyler then started taking pictures for his uncle’s semi-pro football team, the Des Moines Blaze, and his photo career took off.

Tyler now takes photos and video for his personal clients while also working for Hubbell Realty Company as their videographer. He also runs a clothing company called Full Moon with his cousin. Tyler has always made it a priority to make sure his work is different from others.

“There was a period in my photography career where I was like ‘I have to be different’, … and started doing stuff that I wanted to do. When I started doing stuff I wanted to do, that’s when I found my own unique style.”

Todd Bailey, marketing videographer for GV helped Tyler bloom and find his passion with video and photo work. Ultimately, he was a big part of Tyler’s development in his college career. Over the years Bailey watched Tyler and saw his passion for video begin to grow.

“I grew up with his dad and he was fully committed and all in but for football,” Bailey said. “I can see a little bit of a reflection of his dad in that. Just that personality of committing to something of doing the best you can be at it but for Tobias its artistic and he is really a creative person and the fact that he cares so much about it makes it even better.”

Bailey took an interest in Tyler and helped him develop his technical and artistic talents.

“Todd was always asking why I did certain things and why certain elements made that type of impact.” Tyler said. “He just overall was a good mentor and a really good friend,we talked about a lot.”

Tyler’s unique style has developed to the point, where you can tell it’s his work. The editing, color and shot choices are all different. He is always willing to work and make it better.

Shooting is fun, but Tyler prefers editing.

“I put twice the amount of time editing as I do shooting. That’s the fun part, too,” Tyler said. “Everyone loves to shoot but my favorite part is the editing and the process of going through all of those clips and coming out with something totally different.”

Tyler continues to use the passion that he built in his time at GV to keep making projects and show people that anyone can make it in Des Moines. He dreams about telling his story and showing people that they can do anything if they work for it.
