Review: Cheese Bar

Cheese, more cheese, and even more cheese. Cheese Bar, located right off of Ingersoll across from Wellman’s Pub and Eatery A, welcomes anyone in to try varieties of cheese platters and dishes. This restaurant is known for mac & cheese, charcuterie and cheese plates.

The restaurant gives off a Bohemian vibe. The water is served out of mason jars, the decor is unique and the overall environment is easygoing.

“Whether you are looking for a quick bite to eat or place to go out for a fancy date, this would be a great place to go.” -Karleigh Halpin

The menu was overwhelming when I first looked at it. I had never seen so many different types of cheeses before. Their menu has a few categories: grilled cheeses, mac and cheese, salads, sandwiches, boards, fondue and appetizers. The menu was detailed and listed every ingredient, including the different cheeses as well as the price. I also noticed the extensive alcohol menu. They offer over 25 wines and also include several beer options as well as a variety of cocktails. No matter what you are in the mood for, there are many choices.

I brought a friend with me so we could try a variety of different options. We ordered cheese curds, the royal grilled cheese pimento and ham mac and cheese. I wish I could have ordered everything on the menu, but I don’t think my stomach would have liked that.

The cheese curds came out first. I had high hopes for these, as cheese curds are always one of my favorite appetizers. The plating looked as if we should be at a classy five-star restaurant. They were evenly spread out on the plate and served with tomato pepper sauce and herbed crème Fraiche. They looked so good I didn’t even want to eat them. I am glad I did. They were cooked just right and had the right amount of cheese in them. There was plenty to go around between my friend and I. Not to sound dramatic, but I wanted to tear up after eating them. I was so sad they were gone. I would give it a 10/10.

The next thing that we tried was the mac and cheese. I was excited to try this because there were several types of cheese in this and a few different sauces that I had never tried. When this came out, it was not what I was expecting. It does not look like an average mac and cheese dish that you would order at a chain restaurant. It was a big serving size on a plate with rustichella pasta mixed in roasted red peppers, mornay, berkwood ham and house pimento cheese. It had a beautiful appearance. This dish did not skimp on the cheese. It was creamy and buttery, and the pasta was cooked al dente. There was so much food yet again, leaving me with leftovers. This dish came in a close second, after the cheese curds. I would rate this dish an 8/10.

The last item that I tried was the royal grilled cheese. This was the prettiest meal out of the three. It looked like a masterpiece. It was full of ham, bacon and a local cheese blend and it had a sunny side egg on top. It was hard to tell that it was a grilled cheese because it was smothered in mornay sauce. I really did not know how to go about eating this. After the mac and cheese and cheese curds, it was hard to get this one down. Personally, there was just too much cheese on it for me to enjoy. The few bites I had were enjoyable, but I wish it would have had less cheese. The bread was toasted, but as I cut into it, it was soggy. If you are a fan of an excessive amount of cheese, this dish would be for you. I give this dish a 6/10.

The Cheese Bar is money well spent. The atmosphere is unique, and the food is delicious. Whether you are looking for a quick bite to eat or place to go out for a fancy date, this would be a great place to go.
