Humans of Grand View: Tim Reger

Set to depart GV later this month for a new position at Drake University Tim Reger, Campus Services assistant manager, reflects on what life and GV have taught him.

On his faith
“Up at Iowa Regular Baptist Camp they have special needs people who would come there, and you are their counselor for a week; you’re with them 24-7. I had this one guy who would always ask people for their address, and he would write people. You would go home for the summer, and he would write you, and a lot of times it was just gibberish. He would write you and say, “Hey, I’m watching COPS today” or “I had tofu today” or something like that, and nothing really made sense. It was amazing to me at the lowest point when I was really struggling with my faith, he sent me a letter, and it had verses of scripture that he had written down, and they all pertained to things that I was struggling with, and I just thought You know, that’s God saying, “Hey, I’ve got this; I know you are going to have questions, and some questions may never be answered while you are here, but trust in me, trust in what you’ve believed in.”

On religious beliefs at GV
“There are a lot of people here who hold a lot more fundamental beliefs than I thought would be possible in a liberal arts college, and I think there are a lot of people at Grand View that don’t hold fundamental beliefs. I think that’s totally fine because I believe that everyone needs to be exposed to different beliefs.”

On College
There’s a lot of time when you get out of college (and) you won’t do something related to your major, and that’s OK because I look back on my college experience, and I know how it shaped me as a person. It shaped how I was responsible, how I would do projects, how you work together with different people on projects. So those are the things I really pulled from college that allowed me to be employable, maybe not in psychology, but I was able to be employable in a different industry.”
