Frigid, Fun Holiday Runs

Wintertime might not sound like the most appealing time to go outside and run a few miles. But you might find yourself wanting to break out the running shoes after hearing about upcoming holiday-themed runs for great causes in Des Moines.

Jingle Bell Run/Walk – Saturday, Dec. 12

Des Moines Orthopedic Surgeons is holding the 7th-annual Jingle Bell Run/Walk, which is one of the largest 5K races to raise money for arthritis research. The run is a great way to kick off holiday festivities while helping a good cause.

“We try and encourage everybody to wear their elf ears, their Santa hats, their jingle bells and participate in the run,” said Steven Brill, director of special events for the Arthritis Foundation. “It all benefits the Arthritis Foundation and the over 50 million people who suffer from arthritis.”

The event is perfect for serious runners or people just looking to have a little holiday fun. It also comes with a free long-sleeve T-shirt and a free pancake breakfast afterwards.

The Ugly Sweater 5K Fun Run/Walk – Saturday, Dec. 12

University of Dubuque student organization Delta Phi Sigma is hosting the Ugly Sweater Run. The untimed charity event will benefit Dubuque’s local Toys for Tots Foundation. The run starts and finishes at the University of Dubuque’s Heritage Center.

Runners are asked to wear an ugly holiday sweater and other festive holiday attire and join the event for a good cause. Participants are also encouraged to bring a new or unwrapped gift to donate to Toys for Tots Foundation.

YMCA Red Flannel Run – Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016

The 26th-annual Des Moines YMCA Red Flannel Run is held regardless of the weather conditions. The run consists of a three-mile course and a five-mile course. Included with the run is a post-race meal, which is free to all run participants, and a costume contest.

“You just come and run,” Race Director Kathy Strottmann said. “Everyone gets all decked out in flannel. I’ve even seen people wear bathing suits and paint themselves red. It’s just fun.”

All race proceeds go toward the Wellmark YMCA Annual Campaign, which helps make the YMCA accessible to all. The run also serves as an unofficial kickoff to the start of running season. Individuals are encouraged to bring their pets dressed in their best flannel attire, as well.
