Coach Nick Mitchell living the Champion lifestyle

Coach Mitchell has championship rings from the last four years. If the team wins again this year they will break the national record for most consecutive wins.

Nick Mitchell has always strived to live a champion lifestyle and has been passing this way of living down to his 55 wrestlers for the past eight years.

Mitchell grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, where he was introduced to the sport of wrestling through his family, which he calls a true “wrestling family”. He has always loved wrestling since he was a kid and continued to grow in his passion throughout his high school career.

After high school Mitchell choose to continue wrestling at Wartburg College where he was a part of a national winning team. After he graduated, Mitchell became the assistant coach at Wartburg where he stayed for the next for eight years.

When the opportunity came up for Grand View University to start a wrestling team in 2008, Coach Mitchell was hesitant to take the job. After falling in love with the campus during a visit, Mitchell decided to take the opportunity to coach the very first wrestling program at Grand View.

Even though he started the recruiting process late in the season, he managed to wrangle up a team of twenty-six wrestlers for the 2008-2009 season. The Grand View wrestling team has grown to be a strong 55 member team that is building a legacy, not only in the school’s history, but also nationally by winning the past four national championships.

Coach Mitchell continues to build his team on the philosophy of “living a championship lifestyle” which is not only to preform well on the mat but well off the mat also.

“It is a mindset and the right plan, living each day like it is going to make a difference,” said Josh Wenger (Fr.). “The expectations for the team members are very high. Coach Mitchell believes that if the athletes are better in the class rooms, it is going to make them better wrestlers.”

Coach Mitchell hopes that this philosophy will continue the tradition of excellence that he has build for his team and when asked what his goals are for the season he simply stated, “Win everything of course.”
