Forty Trees & Counting

When you enter Kathy Logan’s home, you’re greeted by three small Christmas trees she and her family had before moving into their current house 10 years ago. These trees are just a small taste of the wonderland of themed trees the family has added to their home over the past decade.

Logan’s friends affectionately refer to her as “the crazy Christmas tree lady” because she has 40 Christmas trees and counting.

Each tree has its own theme. One of the most eclectic trees features both Chick-fil-A and golf ornaments. The tree is to honor the friendship of her husband, Kelly, and his best friend who moved away for an opportunity to work for Chick-fil-A. Kathy’s children, Lauren, a junior at Grand View; and Luke, a Grand View graduate; also have their own trees they put up each year with ornaments they received throughout their childhood.

“The fun thing about Christmas is when you start decorating and pulling out ornaments and you start the memories,” Kathy said.

Lauren shares her mom’s sentiment. She said she likes the tradition of putting up the trees because they bring back memories.

Every year, the Logan family decorates a 9-foot tree together. Kelly and Luke put the tree together and string the lights, and then Lauren and Kathy put the decorations on the tree.

“It’s a family thing because it all has to be fluffed, and it’s not prelit, so we have to re-light it and decorate it,” Kathy said. “It takes about eight hours to decorate.”

They got the tree after Kelly spotted someone throwing it away. After several hours of trying to put the tree back together and bringing it back to life, the family began to get annoyed with each other. However, they persevered and eventually finished their project.

“It’s funny how it seemed so terrible when we were doing it, but now it’s something we laugh about,” Lauren said.
